Okay everyone - it's getting closer to the shophop and all the shops are getting busy and trying to come up with "creative" ideas for this years fabric. We decided to design our own fabric again this year - and have chosen Hoffman Fabrics to print it. It is sure to be one of those fabrics that everyone will want a few yards of!! The name of the fabric is "Stars Across West Virginia" and has endless possibilities.
With the gas prices on the rise again, we have decided to run a bus to all 12 shops. My bus will start here - or actually in Liberty Square at Teays Valley and will be staying overnight in Morgantown. The bus will fill fast so I am encouraging everyone to get their checks to me as soon as possible. The checks should be made to
Mountain Quilt Quest - and mailed to me at QBP, 2943 Putnam Ave., Hurricane, WV 25526
There will also be a bus starting in Morgantown - we will post their itineary as soon as we get it. Below is a tentative itineary -

Open House - January 29, 2011
Brrrr!!! I believe Ms. Winter has decided to bless us abundantly this year. Some of YOU are elated with the snow and cold; some of US are probably not the most cheerful people at the present time. While I do love watching it snow – I so do not love driving in it. So if it snows and the roads are bad – please call the shop to make sure we are there. I haven’t had to close the shop any yet but with weather like this – the possibility is there. I do however like to look on the positive side of things and be thankful that I am catching up on a lot of binding projects (big flannel quilts of course).
We have decided to have our Open House a little later this year - Saturday, January 29th from 9:00am – 3:00pm. Hopefully the weather will break a little and everyone will be ready to get out of the house and start some fresh projects!! Our fabric will be on sale again this year - $1.00per yard off – fat quarters - $1.75 each; books, patterns and notions 20% off. This will be a good time to restock your stash as the global cotton market has hit a new all time high – meaning – prices will be raising on cotton products quite dramatically in the coming months. We will be holding prices as low as possible, however, from the sounds of the reports we are receiving – our prices will be increasing as well.
Class Schedule
Circle of Friends – 1930’s Block of Month – Roberta Farmers’ class will be resuming on the fourth Wednesday and fourth Saturday of the month. If you haven’t picked your paper templates up – they are here at the shop. Class fee - $10.00 each class – Wednesday – January 26 – 10:00am-12:00noon and Saturday , January 29th – 10:00am – 12:00noon. February dates – Wednesday 23rd, Saturday the 26th.
Pineapple Block- Roberta Farmer – This will be a one day workshop for those wishing to learn the art of making a pineapple block. Roberta has taught this technique at Cedar Lakes and has graciously agreed to have a one day class to allow the student time to achieve completing one block. Of course, I’m sure not everyone will go home and make a queen size quilt – however, you will have mastered the technique to complete any size you choose. The cost will be $20.00 and will be on Saturday, February 12 from 10:00am-3:00pm.
Adelaide and Charles – Block of the Month – Jody Postalwait – will lead you through this 93” x 119” Civil War Reproduction quilt on the third Saturday of each month. Kansas City Star’s companion book, Faithful & Devoted: To my Adelaide, was developed from the original letters and diaries of Charles and Adelaide who struggle to build a relationship while the soldier was fighting in the Civil War (book not available until October 2011.) This collection of fabric by Marcus Brothers invites the quilters to create commemorative king-size quilts in rose or soft blue colorways. Adelaide features romantic pinks and rosy reds that showcase twelve 6” blocks framed with piecing and sashing. Charles, the soft blue and cream version features the 6” blocks in a more open arrangement that allows space for embroidered quotations. Class dates: Saturday, Feb. 19th, March 19th, April 16th, May 14th, June 18, July16, etc.; class will begin at 10:00am – 12:00pm. Instructor fee - $10.00/month – Kit fee $199.00 – includes 20 yards of fabric and patterns to make both set-ups .
Tennessee Waltz – Jody Postalwait – There was so much interest in this class that we asked Jody if she would teach it again this session. Most of her students in the fall class completed piecing and quilting their projects already!! This is a quilt that looks complicated but is easy enough for even a beginner. Optical illusion of straight lines that curve invite even the most advanced student to piece this quilt. This will be a two-day class – Saturday, March 5th and Saturday April 2nd from 10:00am until 3:00pm. The month in between sessions allows students to complete the “two-block homework” and be ready to sew rows and add borders. Instructor fee: $40.00, will need to purchase book and template from shop.
Quick, Easy Tablerunner – Jody Postalwait - Another technique class that is sure to help you make some fast, beautiful gifts to keep on hand. Jody will guide you through your first tablerunner from 1:00pm-3:00pm on Saturday, February 19th and then it’s up to you to go home and sew up a stack of these to keep on hand for every season and occasion!! Instructor fee: $10.00 – pattern included.
Basket Bounty – Sharon Martin and Cookie Ranson – We’re going to try something a little different for the new year. We have been blessed by having these two wonderful teachers on staff here – so we thought you would feel “bountifully blessed” by having both teachers on one project!! Sound interesting? Moda has introduced a new pattern featuring 6” baskets pieced into an 18” block – with each block having different baskets – sashing and borders complete the top. Sharon will be instructing you on all the piecing techniques and block set-ups. Oops – did I say the quilt top was complete?? Cookie said no – let’s put a different wool appliquéd flower on top of each of Sharon’s blocks – (we all know how well Cookie likes appliqué!!) – The result will amaze you – the dimension the wool gives the blocks really complete this quilt. We know that not all of you like to do appliqué – as well as not all of you like to piece – so this is what we have to offer. Sharon will be instructing the piecing of the blocks from 1:00pm – 3:00pm ; Cookie will be doing the appliqué blocks on either your “pieced block” or just a background block from 1:00pm – 3:00pm starting at the end of March (after you have a few blocks pieced). This gives you the option of piecing and appliquéing; just piecing; or just appliquéing. Kits will be available for the basket blocks, sashing and borders and also for the wool appliqué blocks. Instructor fee$10.00 per class.
Sharon’s piecing class: Tuesday, February 15th, February 22nd and March 1st – 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Cookie’s appliqué class: Tues day, March 29th, April 5th, April 12th – 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Stitch and Split Appliqued Wallhanging – Pat Habenschauss – A one-day technique class that will allow you to make a small wallhanging or make a throw or bed-size quilt. This raw-edge appliqué is a great fat quarter project – good for beginners as well as the advanced quilter. February 9th, Wednesday – 10:00am-3:00pm – Instructor fee: $20.00
Door Hanger Project – Cookie Ranson – Take a few Yo-yo’s, a little ric-rack and an ample helping of Cookie’s techniques to turn this project into a lot of compliments as well as a wonderful decoration for our homes or as a gift for a friend. March 15th and 22nd – Tuesday – 1:00pm – 3:00pm. Instructor fee: $20.00.
It’s Spring Again – Cookie Ranson – Another “little quilt square” to fit on your 12 x 14 scroll hangers. This little red bird with worm in mouth – reminds us that spring is right around the corner – the trees will be budding and the chirping of the little birds will return. Applique, machine quilting on this two session hanger. Tuesday, April 19th and 26th from 1:00pm – 3:00pm – Instructor fee $20.
Neighbor’s Day – 2nd Thursday each month – 10:00am – 3:00pm – You are invited to come in and donate your time to make quilts for those in need – Hospice, veterans, Habitat for Humanity, etc. Bring your lunch or go out with the gang – Kits provided – just bring machine and basic sewing supplies – Sure to have an enjoyable time while sharing your talents with others!!
2011 Thimbleberries kits are available at the shop – 1st quarter available in both light or dark variations.
Still a few more seats on our Pigeon Forge Bus Trip - leaves March 8th - 11th. If interested in attending quilt show and going on the bus - call me at the shop or email. If you haven't made your final payment - please send in so we can finalize all the arrangments. I will be posting the itineary in the very near future.
Stay warm, stay safe and keep quilting!!

Merry Christmas
The quilts are quilted, the bindings are bound, and all that's left to do is call Eleanor Burns and get the phone number of the person who picks up all those scraps!!! I think I need their expertise- lol.
Steph and I will be enjoying a few days away from the shop with family. I will reopen the shop on Tuesday following Christmas-
I would like to thank everyone for the cards and goodies you sent. Most importantly I would like to thank God for giving me so many wonderful friends! I am richly blessed through each of your friendships. May you keep CHRIST in your Christmas this year and always.
God bless

“Better late than never” – a phrase my mother repeatedly told me – well I’m using it this time!! Try as I might – the newsletter just hasn’t wanted to get posted yet – but here it is!
Open House is Saturday – August 28th – from 9:00am – 3:00pm – Fabric will be $1.00 per yard off – Fat quarters $1.50 each – PRECUT FAT QUARTERS ONLY –
Fat quarters cut on the day of the sale will be at regular price ($2.00). Books, patterns and notions will all be 20% off. Jelly rolls, Layer cakes will be $28.00 each.
A lot has been happening here at the shop – we have a new baby named “Millie” that arrived Monday, August 23rd. The “baby” is actually a new longarm quilting system from APQS which is the same brand I currently have. My longarm had to be sent back to Iowa for some repairs – so we decided to purchase an additional machine to help with the growing amount of quilting we do. I am currently talking with them about becoming West Virginia’s APQS dealer – so I’ll let everyone know if I do.
We have a company building our website – which should be live in the next few weeks. We will be posting our newsletters, link to the blog, class schedules and the newest fabric and kit arrivals.
Visions of WV fabric panels are going to be available again soon. They have been printed at the fabric mill in Korea and shipped here to the US. We don’t have an exact date – but wanted to let everyone know that it won’t be much longer.
Neighbor’s Day will continue to be on the 2nd Thursday of each month from 10:00am – 3:00pm – Hope everyone can come out and join Millie Clinton and the rest of the gang work on some much needed community projects.
Class Schedule:
Baskets of Blessings: What a wonderful way to start off our new season of classes than with an overflowing basket of natures blessings. Come join Pat Habenschuss as she leads us beside the “fence” and adds plenty of appliquéd goodies to our baskets. Jan Patek is the designer of this pattern which incorporates simple piecing and machine appliqué methods to construct a luscious fall quilt. Class will be held on Tuesdays – September 7, 14, 21 from 10:00am – 3:00pm. Beginners to intermediate levels – Instructor fee: $40.00 – pattern: $9.00. This is a jelly roll friendly quilt – however, fat quarters always work well!!
Fall Sampler Tabletopper: Beginners delight!! This class will start with fabric selection, a little introduction to the differences in fabrics – then off to cutting techniques, squaring up, ¼” seams, correct pressing methods and all the “tidbits” quilters need to know!! Sharon Martin will be instructing you and showing you all the “in’s and out’s” of quilting- all while you are making your first Sampler tabletopper (or throw??). This class will be held on Thursday from 1:00pm – 3:00pm starting on September 16, 23, 30, and October 7 and 21st. The instructor fee will be $50.00 which includes pattern.
Aunt Grace Circle of Friends: In honor of the 100th birthday of Aunt Grace, Judie Rothermel has created a very special Aunt Grace collection, Circle of Friends. As the originator of 1930’s reproduction fabrics for the quilting industry, Judie presents her Aunt Grace devotees with a group of prints that is varied in color, scale and motif, as well as classic Aunt Grace solids. This project is not only beautiful, but provides quilters with new techniques to advance their quilting skills. Roberta Farmer will be the instructor on this project – sharing her expertise and love of the 1930’s fabrics. This class is better suited to intermediate quilters with a desire to learn some new techniques!! Class will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month (unless it is a holiday) – September 25, October 23, and November 6th – We will skip December and resume classes in January. This class will also be offered on Wednesdays as well (if there is enough interest)- September 22, October 27, and November 3rd – no class in December and will continue in January 26th. Classes will be from 10:00am – 12:00pm on either day. This program is set up for a 7-month class. Instructor fee will be $10.00per class – Kits will be $140.00 and will be available for pickup now.
Harvest Thyme Sweatshirt Jacket: It’s not Fall until Cookie has a new “appliquéd fashion” for us to commence on!! Take a mustard colored sweatshirt – add some fall leaves, acorns, a crow sitting on a pumpkin and you will have Cookies newest creation. Cookie will be supplying the “kits” – all you need is a pattern and a sweatshirt and you’ll be all ready for the coming season. Instructor fee with fabric included: $45.00 – pattern $8.00. Class will be on Tuesdays – September 28, October 5, 12, and 19th from 1:00pm – 3:00pm. Instructor – Cookie Ranson.
All Bundled Up: This little quilt (12” x 14”) is an extremely quick and easy project. Cookie’s little “snowman” is wrapped in a scarf and hat adorned with wool fringes. His smile brightens up any room – display on a single scroll stand (available here at the shop) or hang on the wall. Some may even want to make a pillow for a friend – who knows – if enough interest – we may just plan on some more for special occasions and holidays. This is a great time to get started on some of our gift ideas!! Instructor: Cookie Ranson – November 9, 16 from 1:00-3:00pm – instruction cost $20.00 plus pattern.
Tennessee Waltz: We have had many requests for this class – a book by Eleanor Burns that is an easy, traditional pattern. No curved piecing (but it sure looks that way). The Tennessee Waltz Quilt is easily created by combining 4-patches, star points and snowball blocks. Straight forward piecing techniques makes this pattern fun and easy to make – Join Jody Postalwait on Saturday, October 30 and November 13th from 10:00am – 3:00pm – Instructor fee: $35.00. Great for beginners and intermediate quilters.
Tablerunner: Want another great gift idea?? Jody Postalwait is willing to guide you in a fast and easy tablerunner. Using a border print and a little time – you will have this project finished in no time at all!!! Cost $10.00. Friday evening 6:00pm-8:00pm on October 15th.
We will be taking deposit checks for the Pigeon Forge trip in March 8-11, 2011. This years cost will be $375.00 – 1st payment due 9-15-10 - $125.00 – 2nd payment due 11-15-10 and final payment due 1-15-11. (Will have itinerary in September.)
Happy quilting!!

Summer Fun
I love Summer!! I have been enjoying the fresh picked tomatoes and peppers, zucs and squash and waiting (not quite patiently) on the green beans and corn. Besides quilting, canning is a favorite pasttime of mine - I think alot of it is the self-satisfaction of looking in the pantry and knowing that I helped create another colorful masterpiece!!(Besides being yummy and healthy). Summers also mean lots of beautiful flowers and colorful hummingbirds - just seems like summer has its own special palette - doesn't it??
The only downfall to this special season is the heat - How do you deal with the temperatures spiking 90+? Well, I have decided to try practicing some suggestive thinking - for example - Snowmen, Christmas ornaments, holly and partridges in a pear tree. Can't help feeling a little "cooler" when working with all the new Christmas fabrics. We have Modas fabric lines, - Fruitcake, 12 days of Christmas, Wrapped in Paisley and Making New Friends - all in the shop and samples made. I will try to upload some pictures of what I have come up with so far - otherwise - stop by the shop and check them out. Who knows - maybe working on Christmas quilts and wallhangings will help you beat the heat to!!
**********New Class Scheduled****************
Pat Habenschuss will be teaching "Blessings" - a great beginner to intermediate quilt. The quilt consists of piecing a rail fence block as well as panels of applique - very stunning!! The class will be Tuesday - August 3rd, 10th, and 17th - 10:00am - 3:00pm. The cost of this class will be $40.00 instructor fee, $8.00 pattern. Call the shop to schedule soon. (Picture of sample at beginning of blog above)
We are working on a fall class schedule and date for our annual open house - as soon as the schedule is complete - I'll let everyone know. We will for sure be doing a
30's Block of the Month (Roberta Farmer) that will be held on a Saturday.
Keep checking back for updates - and new Fabric arrivals.
The WV Visions Panels are being reprinted and should arrive in the shop by mid-late August -
Keep loving the sunshine :)
Phyllis
